Come Join Us

Many years ago the good people of Newberry County had a vision for change within the community. The vision of a place where the needs of individuals, families and young people could be addressed and fulfilled. That place has become the Newberry County Family YMCA.

Over the years the YMCA has been making a change in the lives of so many by addressing the most critical developmental, health and social needs of our community. We understand that our young people are in very real need of activities that develop good character and values. We know that our community is facing some significant issues as it relates to health and wellness. We need a place where everyone can come together and all are welcome.

At the Newberry YMCA our board and staff have made a commitment to continue changing lives in this community, but we know we can’t do this without YOU! We need the support of the entire community in order for us to make this happen. We ask that you “Come Join Us” as we continue “Changing Lives”.

Yours in the spirit of Community

Newberry YMCA History

The Newberry YMCA was formed as a result of a project of the Newberry Rotary Club who secured the initial startup money through commitments from the leading industry within the county.  The Y received its charter in October of 1985 and hired Pat Newman as its first Executive Director and maintained an office in the bottom of community hall.  The YMCA moved from the office space to Lominack's hardware store after completing renovations in May 1986.  Pat Newman resigned his position in December of 1990 to accept a position at the New Bern YMCA in North Carolina.  Jerry Coffey was hired to replace Pat in January of 1991.  A capital campaign began in February of 1991 to construct an outdoor pool and bath houses.  Construction began later in the spring and the pool opened June of 1992. A second capital campaign began in the fall of 1998 to build a new facility located next to the current aquatic facility on Jollystreet Road. The new facility would include a fitness room, multi purpose room, daycare room, whirlpool, steam room, sauna, and  locker rooms. Construction began in April of 1999 and the facility opened in January 2000. In 2007 the Board of Directors determined a gym and expanded daycare facility was needed, with that in mind the third capital campaign began. In addition to the gym which boasts an elevated walking track, additional day care, and a refurbished fitness room, a spinning room was created when daycare relocated. And for those who prefer to walk/run outdoors there is a new walking track behind the YMCA. A rededication was held in April of 2009.
